Special Lecture Series topic in April 2019

Science, philosophy and physiology to examine the underlying mechanisms that make yoga, meditation and chanting effective practices for self-regulation, positive social interaction, and transcendental experience.

Friday lecture: Life As Ritual

In the Hindu tradition the entire universe is seen as a grand ritual being played out on the altar of the Divine. In this view, performing simple, daily rituals, can make even the most mundane aspects of our lives sacred. In this talk we’ll examine some of the elements of ritual and how they relate to our lives, and how you can also begin to create small rituals that serve as daily reminders to you that life, time, and awareness are all sacred.

Saturday lecture: Thinking, Feeling, Acting and Being: Four Modes of Yoga

(Includes Pranayama, Chanting and Philosophy)
One of the meanings of the word yoga is union. Yoga teaches us practices by which we can experience a union with our inner
sense of self. In this class we will discuss the four yogas, called Jnana, Bhakti, Karma and Raja, that are the basic ways we can experience this union, through four basic ways we experience the world: through thought, action, feeling, and being. The yogis categorized these four ways based on both the ways we experience the world, and the four temperaments of people that draw them to the different yoga. Each of these yogas can lead us to a sense of inner peace, knowing and knowledge, and having a knowledge about these different approaches can help to broaden our vision about how our practices can pervade our daily life.

Sunday lecture: One Simple Thing

(Includes Pranayama, Chanting and Philosophy)
In this lecture we will discuss some of the underlying mechanisms of yoga that make it an effective practice for self-regulation, emotional regulation, and spiritual experience. Drawing from Eddie’s upcoming book (to be released on March 12th, 2019), he will discuss a variety of scientific findings and yogic explanations that complement both an Eastern and Western approach to spiritual practice. Even after thousands of years, yoga continues to be an infinitely interesting and exciting practice and philosophy, never growing old, and always staying new. In this class we will look at some of the reasons why this is so.

Monday: Chanting and closing the workshop

Monday’s Lecture will primarily be questions and answers, and we will review some of the material that we covered on the previous days. We will also have a longer chanting and meditation period on Sunday as well.

Chanting Class

Chanting is one of the important parts of yoga and spiritual practice, and has a wide range of benefits that are both emotional, psychological and physical. Chanting in a traditional way is a beautiful, devotional practice that you can add to your daily sadhana.
