Astanga Workshop With Petri Räisänen and Wambui Njuguna-Räisänen August 27-30, 2020

Ashtanga Mysore & Special Classes (also online)

Petri focuses on integrating healing and therapy with yoga, meeting student’s individual needs and guiding their progress. Petri’s yoga pose adjustments are gentle, effective, therapeutic and, according to some, almost magical, and originate (besides his own practice and teaching) from his past work as a traditional Finnish folk healer and naturopath. His friendly, relaxed behaviour and intuitive perception give an open, energetic and meditative atmosphere to his classes.

Wambui is teaching yoga through an explicitly trauma-informed, anti-oppressive lens in the wake of #metoo and BLM the collective shift towards decolonialization. BIPOC and/or LGBTQIA+ communities have been the voices most silenced, and are the bodies most left out of the healing space while simultaneously being the most impacted by systemic trauma. Therefore, creating wellness spaces that feel more welcoming, inclusive and accessible is of utmost necessity and importance. Together with her massage training (Chavutti Thirumal) and meditation advocacy, Wambui strives to work at the intersection of social inclusion, equity and wellness.

Michaela Moua is our special guest on Saturday afternoon speaking on #BLM and anti-racism, and how we could be more aware on our hidden tendencies and attitudes. Read more about Michaela here (in Finnish)»

In this intensive workshop Petri and Wambui will guide the Ashtanga practitioners in morning mysore practice from Thursday to Sunday.

Petri and Wambui will also give special classes on Astanga Yoga and awakening views on social communities and self consciousness through the practices of Yoga. Special classes are also streamed online by Zoom.

Special Classes – August 28-30, 2020

In this lecture series we will examine the mechanisms of mind and consciousness that make yoga practices effective for self-study, self-regulation, positive interaction, and transcendental experience.

Friday class: Creating Safer Spaces. How do we change the culture of hierarchy in yoga? Petri & Wambui

The yoga we practice today has been under the stewardship of Indian yogis for millennia. As a practice and philosophy, the benefits of yoga are plentiful. In this discussion, we’ll examine ways in which structural hierarchies are present in our healing spaces, and how we can work to reduce harm caused by power imbalances. What are the ways in which we as a collective carry abusive and repressive patterns and behaviors? How might we address and name these patterns so that the practice of yoga can be positive and beneficial for our personal and collective wellbeing? What does co-creating positive social change for all look like? Let’s imagine it together!
(Includes Meditation)

Saturday class 1: An engaged approach to practice off the mat  / Wambui

In this session, we’ll explore the intersection of personal and collective wellness. Drawing inspiration from George Feuerstein’s definition of horizontal yogis, we’ll examine how contemplative, internal practices like yoga and meditation can inform and nourish a lifestyle equally committed to mindfully-informed activism and social service. We’ll see that the problems of the world are not out there in society; rather, each and every one of us contributes to the world and society we live in. How might we practically apply the aspirations of ahimsa (reducing violence in this context) and embody what it means to be a living ancestor? Bring a journal and a pen for this workshop.
(Includes Meditation)

Saturday class 2: Black Lives Matter..also in Yoga / Michaela Mouan, anti-racist educator

Michele Moua is a Finnish anti-racism educator who has lived experience as an Afro-Finnish woman on Finnish racism and anti-Blackness. She has dedicated her life to advocating for BIPOC rights and educating people who benefit from societal privilege on how to unpack and dismantle Finland’s deeply rooted ideas of white supremacy.

Sunday class: Yoga of higher states, Samadhi’s / Petri

There are eight types and states of Samadhi’s described in the yoga philosophy. Which are the types and how to practice to reach the higher states? Class includes theory and meditation practices.
